  • Mortal Kombat 1 Adds Peacemaker, Krossplay Support as Invasions Season 4 Gets Underway

    All in.

Mortal Kombat 1 is having a big day today. The grisly fighting game is not only kicking off Season 4: The Huntress, it's also adding a new playable character and crossplay — sorry, krossplay — functionality, opening up the community across all platforms.

So, as its name implies, Season 4 of Invasions mode is all about Mileena. She's become the main antagonist for this fresh season, which also adds new challenges, boss fights, and hundreds of cosmetic rewards to earn. Season 4 runs until 16th April.

  • Make Peace with Mortal Kombat 1's Peacemaker on PS5 from Next Week

    Cena heaven.

Mortal Kombat 1 has, surprisingly, been somewhat overshadowed by the success of Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 – but it’s still a great game in its own right. NetherRealm Studios naturally has always had robust support plans for the release, and that will continue with the addition of guest character Peacemaker from 28th February.

  • Mortal Kombat 1's Quan Chi Brings Sweet Misery to PS5 Before Xmas

    Season's beatings.

Mortal Kombat 1 returnee Quan Chi will make his debut as the second DLC character added to NetherRealm’s latest before Christmas. The former miner was revealed as part of a gameplay trailer overnight, which you can watch above. In it, you’ll see the face-painted baldie unleashing all sorts of misery on a variety of opponents.

The press release teases: “Quan Chi’s necromancing powers and manipulation of portals are on full display, including his ability to summon skulls, skeletons, and NetherRealm demons for devastating attacks.” The trailer also includes a brief glimpse of Kameo character Khameleon, who will arrive in January.

  • Mortal Kombat 1 Fans Are Going to Extreme Lengths to Avoid Microtransactions

A battle between fans and financiers.

Back in the day, the only reason you’d consider changing the date of your console’s clock is for Easter eggs, like The End boss battle in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. But it’s 2023, almost 2024, and now players are manipulating time due to more nefarious reasons: namely the controversial microtransactions in Mortal Kombat 1.

As you may already know, developer NetherRealm has started flogging skins from the release’s Invasion Mode in its in-game store. These can be purchased with a premium currency named Dragon Krystals, and include outfits previously available for free through gameplay as part of the title’s seasonal updates.

  • Mortal Kombat 1's Microtransaction Backlash Prompts Free Fatalities

A make good for those who coughed up.

The vociferous response to Mortal Kombat 1’s controversial paid Halloween Fatality has prompted Warner Bros to respond, with fans who coughed up for the seasonal finisher getting two bonus moves for free. Back in October, the publisher attracted the ire of players by flogging a premium Fatality for 1,200 Dragon Crystals, or approximately $10 in real money.

  • Mortal Kombat 1's First DLC Character Omni-Man Arrives Next Week on PS5

    Get a load of this.

Following a brief teaser earlier in the year – and a Microsoft leak – NetherRealm Studios has now confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 DLC character Omni-Man will arrive on 9th November for Kombat Pack owners and 16th November for everyone else. You can get a glimpse of the new challenger in all of his gory glory courtesy of the trailer embedded above.

“Omni-Man, also known as Nolan Grayson, hails from the alien world of Viltrum and has long fought to protect his adopted home of Earth as one of the planet’s most powerful champions,” the official blurb reads. “He even raised his son, the hero known as Invincible, to follow in his footsteps and carry on his legacy. But the Viltrumite warrior’s true mission was never benevolence—it was conquest. And the Viltrum Empire, hungry for expansion, has no intention of stopping at Earthrealm.”

  • Mortal Kombat 1 Fans Are Finished with the PS5 Game's $10 Halloween Fatality

    Boycott begins.

An additional Halloween Fatality is available for purchase within Mortal Kombat 1’s in-game store right now, and the release’s community is incensed by the addition. The finisher costs 1,200 Dragon Crystals, but you’ll need to cough up $10 for 1,250 Dragon Crystals in order to obtain it. When you consider the entire release can be purchased for $70, with dozens of Fatalities inside it, that doesn’t exactly seem like great value for money.

  • Mortal Kombat 1 Developer Teases Future Ghostface, Jigsaw DLC Villainy

    Dare to dream.

Beloved Mortal Kombat 1 developer Ed Boon is teasing some intriguing additions to the latest iteration of the now-venerable fighting franchise. The current roster was already a rogue's gallery of murderers and general villainy, but these latest are comprised of some of the worst monsters in all media.

Boon tweeted an image showing the nightmarish visages of some of horror's most infamous murderers, with ticks against those who have appeared in the series as guest characters previously, like Leatherface, Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees.

  • Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Mortal Kombat 1?

    Prepare for kombat.

Mortal Kombat 1 has been out for roughly a week now, and so we're wondering what you lot think of NetherRealm's latest effort. An undeniable looker boasting what many consider to be the most enjoyable gameplay that the series has seen in years, the especially gory fighting game seems to have been a hit with most fans — at least on a fundamental level. Indeed, we've heard some complaints about online components, and that the single-player offering is a bit lacking. But overall, a solid soft reboot (that totally isn't a soft reboot).

We gave the title a respectable 7/10 in our Mortal Kombat 1 PS5 review. "Like we said in the beginning, Mortal Kombat 1 is the best and most refreshing entry in the series since Mortal Kombat (2011), but it falls directly into the same traps as those prior entries," we concluded.
