John and Arthur were brothers. Both shared a journey scarred by past mistakes and restless attempts to battle their inner conflicts.
But there's something quite...unique about each journey: a last encounter with a moral mirror, represented by Sister Calderón and the Strange Man.
Both these characters act as the moral mirrors, both using the phrase "I know you" to strip away the outlaws' masks from our protagonists.
While their roles seem opposite—the Sister is a symbol of divine grace and the Strange Man a manifestation of inevitable judgment—their purpose is identical: to force a sense of reckoning.
Sister Calderón offered Arthur a path of redemption through vulnerability and love, helping him find peace before death. And so he did.
In contrast, the Strange Man presented John with a cold accounting of his past, proving that while a soul can be redeemed, the consequences of one's actions are inescapable. And indeed, they were.
Together, these two represented the two final stages of an outlaw’s journey, something we've seen with John and Arthur.
While there was an internal transformation of the heart, there was always an inevitable external price of the life they led.
Choices, good or bad, they are optional.
The accountability, on the other hand, isn't.
